Baby Jane Interview 3/5/2010 Location: Trash Fest III! Helsinki, Finland This was a very interesting interview….it was after the first night of Trash Fest III, March 5, 2010 around 2am at Nosturi, so technically March 6th! First they were singing Crazy Nights in Finnish to me…once I could get their attention we got started. The interview was quite long, but it was difficult for me to type it so enjoy what I could transcribe! At one point I say "you guys are like a bunch of kids!" on the audio file...hahahaha...that's rock and roll! MT: Take me back to the beginning. How you got together, named the band, the early stuff. Rick: Me, Mikey and Matt were friends since we were little children… Mikey: Ok, I wanna tell one story. The first time we heard heavy metal was when we started our computer game. Me, Matt and Rick were playing this game and my older sister brought home a hard rocker and he accidentally left an Iron Maiden record into the computer. So when we started to play this game, the game searched for the background music to the game and “Bring Your Daughter…To The Slaughter” was playing. It was Iron Maiden and when we heard that song, we thought what is this? We had never heard heavy metal music before. We were isolated in this little village in Sweden. Rick: We were friends from when we were like five years old. We grew up together. We were next door neighbors and we started playing our instruments when we were like 11-12 years old. Me and Mikey played guitar, he played drums. We played rock music from the beginning, we played Jazz together and stuff from when we were learning in the municipal music school. Then we moved to Gothenburg to play rock music and started Baby Jane when we were 20 years old and all wanted to rock like Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. The three of us started the band and were looking for a singer… Mikey: We didn’t really start the band. We just had something going and rehearsed together. Rick: We had band camp and some songs going on. Matt: So Freddy called me by accident… Freddie: It wasn’t by accident. Matt: Well, in a way. We were not really close friends in the beginning. He called me one day and I looked at the number and wondered who is this guy calling me? He said “I am going to be a rock star do you wanna be in my band?” So I told him to come up and play in our band. So he did and we started a band. He was really cool. He made a big, bad ass impression you know? He was like a pirate and had brand new tattoos and everything. A really crazy bad ass sleaze rocker…. Freddie: My first impression was, I had just sang for Crash Diet before I got to Baby Jane. They were something that Crash Diet was at that time and I knew the first day I met Baby Jane that the guys had something special and now I am here and I am very satisfied to be with these guys. I can’t be with no one else. It brings something special to me for my heart and no one else can take a part of this band. I am very proud to be the singer and I have a lot of support of me when I am on stage. Manx: I met Mikey in mid summer 2006 and I was in Debbie Ray as you know. We met each other and we had fun. Mikey was a cool dude and I thought he could be my best friend in the world. I played in town a year later and Mikey was at the gig and when things went bad with Debbie Ray I called him and asked him if could be a singer of Debbie Ray and he laughed, but we never spoke of Baby Jane at that time. Another part of the story is coming, when we all met at an after party another time… MT: I have heard quite a few stories about you guys being partiers. Rick: My place was the shit. All the after parties and stuff…I am not talking about lazy ass after parties. We were drinking premium whiskey til 6am and that kind of stuff and that is where I first met Manx. He took my acoustic guitar and played Bon Jovi and I thought he was a cool guy and asked him to rehearse with us and see where it goes. So that is where I met Manx and after that rehearsal that was it. So that is the history of Baby Jane…can we go on to the next question? (all laugh) Rick: The band name… MT: Oh yea, I forgot about that. How did you come up with the band name? Rick: I write and sketch a lot and I saw a documentary about Alice Cooper and he talked about when he was choosing his band name. He was thinking about Alice Cooper, Lizzy Borden, Baby Jane being these cute girls with a fox behind their ears. It sounded dangerous so I wrote it down and when we were looking for a band name we went back to my diary. It sounded cool. MT: Here is a silly question. If you could be invisible, stop time or fly which would you select and why? Rick: Invisible…Invisible. Matt: I think I wanna be like Spiderman. MT: Spiderman? But that is not an option. (laugh) Matt: He’s a cool guy. Manx: Can you turn it on and off? MT: Yea. Manx: I would be invisible. MT: Why? Manx: Why? It would be cool and could go and check on girls. (all laugh and guys say "it's always about the girls!) Mikey: I would like to fly. Matt: But in a Spiderman way… MT: Ok so you wanna be Spiderman. (all laugh) How about you Freddie? Freddie: I am a spider you know? I wanna touch people. I wanna touch the love, I wanna touch the hate. I want every experience. I am a spider. MT: How is the song writing process of the band? Manx: That is a hard answer… Mikey: I write some cool riffs, Freddie writes the lyrics, Rick is into everything… Rick: I love to write music and sometimes it is for Baby Jane. I don’t present it to the band if I don’t think it is good enough. I just love to write music.
