Chris Harms & Sebsta, Lord Of The Lost

Interview via Skype 3/20/10

Everyone that follows me for my trash wisdom (should we call it trashdom?) knows by now that I have a new favorite band. I loved the CD prior to Trash Fest, but they blew me away with their live act and I am now hooked. The band is from Hamburg, Germany and they are called "Lord Of The Lost". I wasn't able to catch up with creator/genius/front man, Chris Harms at Trash Fest because he is so outright incredible with fans, but I was able to catch up with him & guitarist, Sebsta for a video interview on Skype today, so enjoy!

mt: Give me some band history.

Chris: Actually I didn't really plan to make a band and yet in the beginning it had some strange names that I don't even remember. I think one of them was "Not From This World" which was a working type before the project. As soon as I figured out I could make a solo project out of it I just called it "Lord" because it was just about me and then the other guys got in bit by bit because I realized I needed a band to go on stage with and I really wanted to find a real band not just do it on my own. Short before the release of the "Dry The Rain" single last summer our label came up with some kind of problems. Some people had reserved some kind of copyrights on the name "Lord". Bands like this rock-a-billy band, "The Lords" or this Australian metal band called "Lord" and then "Lordi" from Finland and they were like you can't call it "Lord" you will have some serious problems with that. So we had to come up with a name in a couple of days, which was very hard. We had many funny names, I think our bass player had names like "Mega Lord", and "Snuff Lord", and "Lord Gasm" and I was like, "My God no, we can't do that". Then I was talking to the one guy from our label and I don't remember if it was him or me but we came up with "Lord Of The Lost" somehow and we all liked it and the message that was in it. That's it and we are all really happy with it and in the end we like it much better than just "Lord" because it sounds more like a bands name.

mt: Where did you get the nickname "Lord"?

Chris: This was actually a joke by my ex girl friend, she made fun about me being a sucker for megalomania.

mt: How would you describe your music to someone not familiar with it?

Chris: We once came up with the pussy-wetting-goth-rock thing, which is kind true, but you can't tell it to people in a serious way so you describe it.

Sebsta: Between HIM and Rammstein.

Chris: Yes, I would say something between HIM and Rammstein.

mt: Ok that is a good comparison. How did you get started as a musician?

Chris: I started at the age of five years playing the cello so the first music I played was classical music actually. When I was 10 or 11 years old, I don't remember, I grabbed one of the guitars from my parents, they don't really play guitar, but they had guitars at home and started playing on it. My sister played the piano and I just always went there and pushed some keys on the piano and that is how I found out that this is another instrument I really like. Then every two years when I wasn't satisfied with the instruments I couldn't play I wanted to learn a new one.

mt: I played violin when I was little, but it never stuck.

Chris: You didn't like it?

mt: I guess not enough to keep up with it. Which is a funny picture me and a violin.

Chris: I would really like to see that. The funny thing is that Sebsta actually maybe 15-20 years ago was much more related with the hip hop and rap scene and hadn't had anything to do with rock and metal music. I have known him for seven or eight years, he is the tattoo artist working at the tattoo studio where I got all my tattoos from and two or three years ago when I got started with the Lord thing and he said he was interested in learning the guitar so I was like "hey do you need some kind of aim you can work for, do you wanna be in the band?" and he was like "what?" and I said "yea, you've got one year to learn it." and he said "Ok." So actually he was in the band without playing guitar.

mt: That's awesome. See I would have never guessed that.

Chris: yea, it's a good story.

Sebsta: I play it ever day.

mt: Well you do a great job, the band is really tight. I was blown away.

Chris: It can always be better, but it is good so far.

mt: How did you feel about the Trash Fest experience?

Chris: I must say I have been to many indoor festivals and without exaggeration I can tell it was one of the best and coolest concerts/festivals I have ever been to. I really liked the mood, you know, because every body liked each other. There was no competition between the bands that you usually have and they are all there because you have brought them together and you seem to have a good feeling for people. Who's cool and who's not so that's why we've been there and we felt comfortable all the time.

mt: Good, I am glad.

Chris: It was like meeting a huge circle of friends without having seen them before so it was really great.

mt: Who are your musical influences?

Chris: I don't really have a certain taste in music, I just like good songs so I listen to everything between Black Metal and Lady Ga Ga. You know what I mean? I think one of the main influences during the last years and when I was a little younger were bands like Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein for sure. Those are bands that really made me how I sound like today somehow.

mt: If you could have one super power what would you want?

Chris: I have been asked this many times, I always have a different answer. I think I'd like to be able to stop the time. Just to stop everything around me and just me that is able to move. Because when you can stop time you can do so many things. You can embarrass people you don't like, you can just undress them or whatever. See I would really like to do that.

mt: I see a cat in the background...

Chris: Yea, what is the word for it...when female cats want to get fucked and stuff.

mt: Heat. She is in heat.

Chris: I am going to get her, hold on. (brings cat to the computer) Here she is...look in the camera.

mt: Awww she is pretty. Pretty eyes.

Chris: She is so annoying at the moment.

mt: My cat was going into heat cycles every couple of weeks, we went crazy. Oh, I hear her....

Chris: She doesn't even let us sleep. (starts making cat noises)

mt: Oh yea that's fun. Ok, what one thing would you sell your soul to the devil for?

Chris: Actually my friends say I am the devil so I am not really able to...(laughs)

mt: Sell it to yourself? Why do they say that? (laugh)

Chris: I dunno, you will have to ask Sensai one day. He can tell you.

mt: Ok, I will write myself a note to ask him. What did you think of Finland?

Chris: The last couple of years I thought that all the Goth girls were so Finland crazy and I never really seemed to understand it. I was always like, "What is it about Finland? Why do they like Finland so much? Is it because Ville Valo?" Once we got there, it was the first time for me being in Helsinki or Finland in general...I can really tell you it is a great country, it is a great city. On one hand it is so calm and so relaxed like a vacation place and on the other hand there are rock bands on every corner and most of the people that run around there look like people from rock festivals. So we really liked it. We would be happy to be back there again soon and have a tour.

mt: What bands would you like to tour with?

Chris: It is funny because I have been thinking much about touring with The 69 Eyes since we have been talking about it. The 69 Eyes would be one of the bands I would really like to tour with, I think it would be the perfect audience for us.

Trash Fest III Kick Off Party 3/4/10

mt: Yea, definitely. Who are bigger partiers? The Finnish or Germans?

Chris: In general, the Finnish people, but the people around me are much more like Finnish people when it comes to partying. Whenever we have a party it always ends up in a big mess. We are all soaked with beer and stuff. Three days ago we went to a party and he left too early...20 minutes after he left we were all on the dance floor in this club in Hamburg all soaked in beer and paraffin wax from the candles. We looked so fucked up...did you see that picture of me and the guitar player in the wigs?

mt: Yup. You guys definitely know how to have fun. Give me one word to describe each of you.

Chris: Sebsta you give me the name of each band member and I will give you one word.

Sebsta: Sensai

Chris: Smurf (we all laugh)

Sebsta: Any

Chris: Tits

Sebsta: Class

Chris: Horny

Sebsta: Bo

Chris: Jackcoke, that is two words, but...

Sebsta: Sebsta

Chris: This makes me so insecure because you are sitting right beside me...(Sebsta hides)...tattoos

Sebsta: Yourself

Chris: Me? Oh...Indescribable

mt: Now you will love this question. Five facts about yourself.

Chris: Five facts about me?

mt: Yes.

Chris: Um...

mt: It can be anything...something random that people don't know about you.

Chris: This may sound strange, but I hate people actually except the people I don't. (laughs)

mt: No it doesn't sound strange, because I am the same way. People think I love everybody, and I totally don't.

Chris: The next thing is that...ummm...I used to have a boyfriend for three months ten years ago.

mt: Really? (all laugh)

Chris: Just because I wanted to try if I am gay or not because everybody told me that I was gay. Ok, well everybody tells me, so I will try it and as soon as it came to penetrating each other it was like "Oh no, I am definitely not gay." (all laugh)

mt: That's good, ok...that is two. (laugh)

Chris: I just sexually satisfied my cat with a pencil two days ago because she was so horny. (all laugh)

Sebsta: Which side?

Chris: The rubber side. (laughs) I had to go to the studio this morning and I was still drunk from yesterday, so that is the forth and the fifth one is that I would not like myself if I had to be my own friend.

mt: Really? So you wouldn't be friends with yourself that is interesting. Ok, worst habit, best trait.

Chris: One of the best things about me is that I am able to create something interesting out of nothing or maybe out of some parts. I have the power to take some notes from my musicians and put them together and create something new. This is what I am doing all the time and it is something I do quite well. My worst habit is sometimes I try to control too much because if I let things out of my hands, it is going to be destroyed by someone else. I have had that experience many times with different guys from other bands. I am too afraid sometimes too to leave other people to do stuff and it doesn't have to do with trust because things are so important for me. I have to learn to let go.

mt: How about 2010 plans?

Chris: We have more wishes than plans because if I could turn every wish into a plan then this year would need 1,000 days. Our plans are to play live as much as possible because this a new band and we need more experience to play live and I hope to finish the recording of the second album this year so we can release it next year.

mt: Message for your fans?

Chris: I need inspiration...(looks at Sebsta)

Sebsta: Be like you wanna be. Don't over think it, just do it.

Chris: Actually that is his message and I am totally ok with it.

Fast Facts about Chris!

Date of Birth: January 22nd

Height: 6 ft 1 inch

Shoe Size: 10

Fave Color: People always laugh, but I really like dark gray.

Fave Sound: Definitely not the sound of my horny cat (laughs). I think one of my favorite sounds is the sound of a tattoo machine because there is always this mixture of fear and excitement and you need to get over it.

Fave Drink: If it is with alcohol it is Jack & Coke at the moment,  but in general it is cold milk.

Fave Food: It used to be sushi, but I had some bad sushi a few weeks ago...maybe it is not sushi, maybe it is. I love Hesburger...the Finnish fast food thing. I think I have to go there after recording guitars.

Fave place to visit: I am not the travel kind of guy because I am always away, so I like to be at home.

Fave Movie: At the moment, Avatar. I really liked the movie, it made me feel like a 12 year old kid in a fantasy world. It made me forget everything around me, I like that.

Fave Band: Rammstein

Fave Star Wars Character: Jar Jar Binks

Indulgence: Eating, fucking and sleeping. Very basic.

I would like to thank Chris & Sebsta for the great interview. I am looking forward to seeing them again later this year! ~mt
