Mortiis

Phone Interview 10/10/10

I would like to thank Mortiis for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions! Be sure to download, the new Mortiis CD, "Perfectly Defect" NOW!! Mortiis will be headlining at Trash Fest IV in Helsinki, Finland on April 1st! ~ mt

mt: I love the new CD! Are there plans to release the CD for sale as well?

Mortiis: Absolutely. This is where our managers job begins...I would personally be extremely disappointed if it weren't released physically on vinyl and CD. I like the download because it is easy and practical, but purely for the sake of music itself and just having something easily accessible to listen to, then yes downloads are perfect, but for someone like me, who is not 15 years old, I have been collecting records since I was 12 years old.

mt: Yea, I am the same way. I love to have the CD. My son kills me when he says "download this for me."

Mortiis: Yea, I wanna fill my shelves with cool stuff! Records, especially vinyl. To me, CD's are the annoying medium between the vinyl and the download. You know, it is not artistically cool enough, because the vinyl is superior. If it is just for listening purposes, I might as well just have the frickin' download, but of course the CD sounds better than the digital download.

mt: When it does come out, where there be additional tracks when it is officially released?

Mortiis: Yea, there will be bonus tracks. We are pretty stocked up.

mt: I figured, it has been awhile.

Mortiis: It has been a long ass time, let's put it that way. We have been working a lot. Even though we have not been visible every single day, there has been work done.

mt: Do you have any touring plans for 2011?

Mortiis: That is a little bit up in the air, we have several things sort of out there, what is the expression? Balls in the air? Stick some balls in the air! We have some people on it, we are just waiting for information. A little early to make statements, unfortunately. We are wanting to make something happen, but if we are going to tour "Perfectly Defect", it has to be something cool. I think the coolness level we created around the free download is pretty high, so it has to be worth it. Yes, I would like to tour and we would go anywhere a tour takes us.

mt: Here is a fan question. How long does it take for you to put your makeup on?

Mortiis: I usually give it an hour, that gives me ample time to do it, then I don't have to stress.

mt: I am thinking about the time at Trash Fest. I was laughing about everyone being covered with corn starch.

Mortiis: Well that only takes about two minutes, since you just throw it on.

mt: Yea, I was laughing. I don't remember who was doing it, but someone was slapping people with corn starch. Handprints all over the place!

Mortiis: Not every band we have toured with has been happy about that. Fuckin' sissies.

mt: Name five objects/things that you could not live without?

Mortiis: I can say anything?

mt: Yup, people/places/things.

Mortiis: That I can not live without...Of course my heart tells me, my wife and my daughter. Then pretending there is electricity available anywhere, my MAC. Then probably any kind of random choice of a sampler or keyboard because I could make some kind of music. My German filter bank, which is a crazy ass fuckin' distortion thing that I use to put a lot of sounds through to make it sound insane...so that takes care of the essentials, I have my family and I can make music.

mt: What is the biggest misconception about you?

Mortiis: I think the biggest misconception about me is probably that people think I am a huge death or black metal guy and that is not necessarily true. I mean, I do have that background, but I don't make that kind of music. I do enjoy the attitude and the atmosphere of a lot of it and I think I am bringing it with me from the time I spent in that environment. People look at our pictures, the logo, the record sleeves and they automatically think it is going to be a brutal noisy metal attack. It's not, I mean yea, sure it can be a noisy attack at times, but a different kind of noise.

mt: It is true, people sometimes look at images and just assume.

Mortiis: It is very easy, but that is something you have to accept. I still get annoyed by it, but I just tell myself, you do it too. We all do it too, I still walk around as one of the most prejudice assholes on the street.

mt: If there were a musical based on your life, what would it be called?

Mortiis: You Put A Hex On Me!

mt: How did you come up with that so quick?

Mortiis: Because I have been thinking about it for a long ass time. Not as a musical, but as an autobiography title. That always seemed like a logical title for me.

mt: Are you ready for Trash Fest?

Mortiis: Of course!
